Joan's parents won't let her go to the ball with Peter unless someone sensible goes too, so Pat tags along with them. Pat feels out of place until a handsome man asks her to dance. He dances with her all night to the exclusion of anyone else. He asks her to meet him in the gardens later where he kisses her goodbye. Then as he slips away, she hears shouting and learns that he is a jewel thief. Seeing Pat didn't know anyone at the ball, he had asked her to dance with him as good cover.
