Love Story Picture Library #877
In "Miss Average," a 1971 Love Story Picture Library gem, Polly’s mundane life takes a surreal turn when a joke on a form leads to an unexpected revelation about her place in the world. When her boss discovers her answers perfectly mirror the average citizen, he’s delighted—she’s become the ideal poll subject, and he wants her to stay exactly as she is. But Polly isn’t content with being average, not when she’s just begun to question what that even means. Pujolar’s expressive cover captures the story’s quiet irony, while the typeset lettering keeps the tone crisp and grounded.

Polly is an opinion pollster bored with her job. As a gag, she fills out a form herself. When the head of the polling company calls her into his office, he tells her that the polls from each street were analysed and her street matched exactly with the average. When she sees the historic form, she realizes it is the form she filled out as a gag. Expecting to be sacked, Martin is thrilled because they can just use her instead of sending out pollsters. Martin wants her to stay just the way she is to be useful, but Polly doesn't want to be just average.
