Manifest Destiny #3
The third volume of Delcourt's French edition of Manifest Destiny — subtitled Chiroptères et Carnivores — arrives with a cover that draws the eye immediately to a central figure draped in a fur cloak, hands spread wide over a framed display holding a skull and a large bat specimen. Surrounding him is a crowded ensemble of frontier figures — rugged, intense, and diverse — including a striking blue bird perched at the lower right, all rendered with vivid detail by Matthew Roberts and Owen Gieni. Chris Dingess's vision of Lewis and Clark's expedition as something far stranger and more dangerous than history recorded continues to feel like one of 2017's most distinctive adventure series.
