Janet goads Flora into slapping her, but Stirling arrives just at that moment. Janet continues to play up to Stirling as Flora tries to hide her feelings from him. Stirling asks Flora to shift the logs before going to bed to prevent a fire, but later that night a fire breaks out. Janet tells Flora that if the castle burns down through her fault, he would hate her forever.
