While trying to put out the fire, Flora notices that her mother is laying on the ground outside with a bucket beside her. Part of the roof gives way and the snow puts out the flames. Then Flora and her mother are flown to the hospital. Days later, Stirling visits Flora's mother and learns that Janet had started the fire on purpose. Stirling tells Flora he loves her and asks her to marry him.
