About this Issue

The Marvel NOW! Omnibus serves as the definitive documentary artifact of one of Marvel's most consequential publishing realignments of the 2010s — a line-wide creative reshuffle triggered by the conclusion of Avengers vs. X-Men that brought dozens of new #1 issues and fresh creative teams to virtually every corner of the Marvel Universe. Under one cover it captures the debut chapter of Otto Octavius as the Superior Spider-Man, Sam Alexander's first solo outing as the new Nova, Jonathan Hickman's expansive Avengers relaunch, Brian Michael Bendis's time-displaced All-New X-Men, and the inaugural Guardians of the Galaxy series that directly preceded the characters' cinematic breakthrough. As a curated sampler of a single publishing moment, it offers a rare cross-section of how Marvel simultaneously reinvented its tone, its character rosters, and its approach to reader accessibility during a pivotal era.

In "NYSE," Gambit trades the X-Men’s battlefield for the high-stakes world of high society, slipping into a fundraiser hosted by the enigmatic arms dealer Borya Cich at Empire State University. With a mind full of old habits and a heart still drawn to the thrill of the heist, Gambit sets his sights on one of Cich’s most prized artifacts—no easy task when the stakes are as dangerous as they are glamorous. Written by James Asmus and illustrated by Clay Mann, with colors by Rachelle Rosenberg and letters by VC's Cory Petit, this story unfolds with sharp wit and tension, all framed by Joe Quesada and Danny Miki’s striking cover.

History

Marvel Editor-in-Chief Axel Alonso announced the Marvel NOW! initiative on July 3, 2012 in an exclusive reveal in Entertainment Weekly, framing it as a 'refresh' rather than a reboot — a new entry point growing organically out of the Avengers vs. X-Men event, with new #1 issues and reshuffled creative teams rolling out weekly from October 2012 into early 2013. The omnibus hardcover was announced by Marvel in early 2013 and published in July 2013, consciously echoing DC Comics' similar New 52 Omnibus collection released the prior year; the cover was provided by Chief Creative Officer Joe Quesada, who had teased the initiative's visual identity from the start. Executive Editor Tom Brevoort and Alonso jointly oversaw the editorial coordination of the sprawling initiative, which touched over 20 new or relaunched titles in its first wave alone.

Trivia · 8 facts

  • Collects the first issues of every Marvel NOW! series launched from late 2012 through early 2013, including Uncanny Avengers #1, All-New X-Men #1, Avengers #1, New Avengers #1, Superior Spider-Man #1, Nova #1, Guardians of the Galaxy #1, Young Avengers #1, Uncanny X-Men (2013) #1, Thor: God of Thunder #1, Captain America (2012) #1, Indestructible Hulk #1, Deadpool (2012) #1, Iron Man (2012) #1, Fantastic Four (2012) #1, FF (2012) #1, Thunderbolts (2012) #1, Avengers Arena #1, Cable and X-Force #1, Secret Avengers (2013) #1, Savage Wolverine #1, Fearless Defenders #1, Morbius: The Living Vampire #1, Uncanny X-Force (2013) #1, Wolverine (2013) #1, plus Captain Marvel #1, Hawkeye #1, Gambit #1, X-Men #1, Red She-Hulk #58, Journey Into Mystery #646, Avengers Assemble #9, and the Marvel NOW! Point One anthology.
  • Superior Spider-Man #1, included here, launched the controversial and critically reassessed series by Dan Slott with art by Ryan Stegman in which Otto Octavius — inhabiting Peter Parker's body following the 'Dying Wish' arc in Amazing Spider-Man #700 — takes up the Spider-Man mantle, with Peter Parker's surviving consciousness as an unseen passenger.
  • Nova #1 marks Sam Alexander's first solo series debut; the character was created by writer Jeph Loeb and artist Ed McGuinness, first appearing in Marvel Point One #1 (November 2011), and the solo launch reprinted here introduced him to a wider reading audience.
  • All-New X-Men #1 by Brian Michael Bendis and Stuart Immonen, also collected here, brought the time-displaced original five X-Men — including a young Jean Grey — into the present-day Marvel Universe, a premise that drove a major portion of X-Men storytelling for the next several years.
  • The omnibus was conceived as a direct counterpart to DC Comics' New 52 Omnibus hardcover released the prior year, reflecting the competitive dynamic between the two publishers during the era of line-wide relaunch initiatives.
  • The cover art for the omnibus was provided by Marvel Chief Creative Officer Joe Quesada, whose promotional imagery had defined the visual identity of the Marvel NOW! launch from its initial announcement.
  • Marvel NOW! was announced by Editor-in-Chief Axel Alonso in July 2012 and explicitly described as a post-Avengers vs. X-Men line refresh — not a continuity reboot — with Executive Editor Tom Brevoort co-overseeing the editorial rollout that ran from October 2012 through early 2013 and eventually extended into multiple subsequent waves.
  • The hardcover runs approximately 776–808 pages (sources vary slightly between printings) and was published by Marvel Worldwide, Incorporated in July 2013 under ISBN 9780785183808.
