About this Issue

Marvel Spotlight #4 closes the three-issue tryout arc that launched Jack Russell — Werewolf by Night — and serves as the direct on-ramp to his own solo title, making it a structural keystone of Marvel's early-1970s horror revival. Most significantly, it delivers the first physical appearance of the Darkhold, the 'Book of Sins' that Conway and Ploog seeded as the engine of the entire lycanthropy mythology; that grimoire would go on to drive storylines across Tomb of Dracula, Doctor Strange, the Scarlet Witch, and eventually the MCU. The issue also introduces Buck Cowan, the occult-writer ally who becomes Jack's longest-running supporting character, instantly broadening the cast beyond the Russell family and giving the forthcoming series a durable human anchor. Taken together, the Darkhold debut and the Cowan introduction make this final Spotlight chapter far more consequential to Marvel's supernatural corner than its 'last issue of a tryout run' status would imply.

History

The Werewolf by Night feature was a direct product of the 1971 revision to the Comics Code Authority's rules, which for the first time permitted Code-approved werewolf stories; Marvel moved quickly, with Roy and Jean Thomas conceiving the character concept, Gerry Conway scripting, and Mike Ploog illustrating all three Marvel Spotlight chapters. Conway, barely twenty years old at the time, was simultaneously architecting other pillars of Marvel's Bronze Age horror line — he wrote the debut issue of Tomb of Dracula the same year — which gave the Werewolf mythology a tonal coherence with the wider monster line. The letters page of this very issue included an editorial announcement that the Werewolf was graduating to his own title, confirming that the three-issue audition had done its job, and the story's cliffhanger was left deliberately unresolved to carry readers directly into Werewolf by Night #1.

Trivia · 8 facts

  • First appearance of the Darkhold: the arcane grimoire is physically discovered in this issue, having only been mentioned by name in Marvel Spotlight #3; it was created by Gerry Conway and Mike Ploog.
  • First appearance of Buck Cowan, an occult-focused journalist who becomes one of Jack Russell's most enduring supporting characters throughout the Werewolf by Night solo series.
  • First appearances of villain Miles Blackgar and his mutant daughter Marlene Blackgar (whose petrifying gaze is central to the plot), as well as Blackgar's thug Garth (dies this issue) and the creature Strug.
  • Third and final appearance of Werewolf by Night (Jack Russell) in Marvel Spotlight; the character's three-issue tryout (issues #2–4) concluded here before he launched into his own ongoing title.
  • The story — titled 'Island of the Damned!' — was written by Gerry Conway and fully illustrated (interior and cover) by Mike Ploog, with lettering by Sam Rosen and editing by Stan Lee.
  • The issue's letters page carried an in-comic editorial announcement that Werewolf by Night was receiving his own series, with this story's cliffhanger continued directly in Werewolf by Night Vol. 1 #1 (September 1972).
  • The story was reprinted internationally, including in Dracula Lives (Marvel UK, 1974) #9 and the Swedish Varulven #3; it was later collected in Marvel Masterworks: Werewolf by Night Vol. 1 (2022), which gathers Marvel Spotlight #2–4 and Werewolf by Night #1–8.
  • The Darkhold introduced here became one of Marvel's most consequential supernatural artifacts, appearing across Darkhold: Pages from the Book of Sins (1992–94), Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. (Season 4), WandaVision, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, and Agatha All Along.
