“A Night in Hangman's House!”

In "A Night in Hangman's House!", Duncan and Laura take shelter in an isolated old house, where the caretaker's eerie tale of Peter van Kleek, a cruel hangman from the past, sets a chilling tone. As night falls, the legend comes alive when a ghostly rope attacks Duncan—only to be cut down with an axe, leading them to uncover Van Kleek’s long-buried skeleton behind the fireplace. The story, illustrated by John Forte, unfolds with a tense, gothic atmosphere, and the haunting cover by Sol Brodsky and Bill Everett captures the dread of the night.

Duncan and Laura are forced to spend a night in an old house. The caretaker relates the legend of the old owner, Peter van Kleek, a wicked hangman. In the night, the caretaker dies and a ghostly rope tries to strangle Duncan but he severs it with an axe. They find Van Kleek's skeleton behind the fireplace and lay it to rest, hopefully ridding the house of the ghost.
