In the Masked Marvel story, the hero battles criminals who have stolen a "magnet" and are planning to use it on a model plane, leading to a confrontation involving a red plane, a tramway wreck, and a volcano where the Marvel pursues the villain known as the Hawk across a snowy mountain landscape. In "Doc Doyle: The Scientific Detective," by Maurice Gutwirth, the titular detective investigates the "Case of the R," leaving his headquarters and taking a walk through the neighborhood to track down a Doctor Claney and uncover the mystery.
The Masked Marvel and his team of former G-men—ZR, ZY, and ZL—are hot on the trail of The Hawk, a cunning international criminal who's built a fortune in stolen jewels and cash hidden in a secret vault. When they catch wind of The Hawk's latest robbery aboard a gambling ship, they seize the chance to follow him to his hidden lair—a fireproof vault buried within a Mexican volcano. Now The Masked Marvel must infiltrate the mountain fortress before The Hawk can secure his empire of stolen riches.
When a tugboat captain named Christopher Carllsen hauls a coffin out of the harbor, McDonald of the waterfront undercover force spots a suspicious connection: a recent grave robbery at a cemetery and a masked bandit casing the grounds. Working with Christopher's knowledge of the tides and the harbor, McDonald traces the coffin's drift back to an abandoned warehouse and pieces together a scheme targeting wealthy members of a religious sect and their buried valuables. Now McDonald must set a trap to catch the gang before they strike again.
In the isolated mountains of 1940, Fadeaway Farr arrives at the cabin of Hermit Jackson—only to witness him shot dead. Amid the danger, he forms an uneasy alliance with Caine’s daughter, Mary, a young woman haunted by her father’s cruelty and secretly trained in medicine. As they escape into the wilderness, pursued by Caine’s men, Fadeaway must rely on instinct and courage to survive—until a broken token reveals a truth buried for eighteen years: Mary is not just a prisoner, but the lost daughter of the very man she once called father.
