“The Sword Song on a Barren Heath”

In "The Sword Song on a Barren Heath," a dying Maverick answers a desperate plea from Epsilon Red’s daughter, joining her and Wraith in a high-stakes hunt for Sabretooth—only to find himself outmaneuvered by Omega Red, who’s after the Carbonadium Synthesizer Maverick has concealed. Written by Larry Hama and brought to life with sharp, dynamic art by Wilfred Santiago—both pencils and inks—this first issue of the 1997 series sets a tense, action-packed tone, with Marie Javins’ colors and Chris Eliopoulos’ lettering adding depth to the journey across Canada. The cover by Santiago captures the moment’s urgency, drawing readers into a story where legacy, loss, and survival collide.
