Cannon is stymied as both Barnic and the Japanese police refuse to give him back the grey matter liquid that was stolen from him. They explain to Cannon how the mysterious liquid will work as a renewable energy source for all of Japan. Barnic double deals with the Japanese government, however, and tells Taras' brother Biranha where the grey matter is being kept. Cannon confronts Barnic about this betrayal and lets the spirit of Taras take over his body in dealing with Barnic's men. Cannon begins to formulate a plan as to how he is going to get the grey matter back from Biranha.
