In Mighty Jack #1, Ben Hatke crafts a whimsical yet urgent tale of sibling loyalty and unintended consequences, as quiet Jo and her impulsive brother Jack trade car keys for a mysterious box of seeds. What follows is a garden of bizarre, ever-growing flora that soon spirals beyond control—until a final, monstrous bloom pulls Jo into another realm. With help from their neighbor Lilly, who arms them with makeshift renaissance armor and potent plant-based energy drinks, Jack sets out to bring her back. Ben Hatke’s distinctive art, colored with vibrant energy by Alex Campbell and Hilary Sycamore, brings this strange, grounded adventure to life, all under a striking cover by Ben Hatke.

At the insistence of his sister who almost never speaks, Jack swaps the keys to his mother's car for a box of strange seeds, creating financial disaster. Jack and Maddy plant the seeds, which grow into a garden of strange and even dangerous plants, which they explore with the help of neighbor Lilly. Finally Jack destroys the garden as too dangerous, but Maddy plants the last pack of seeds. These spawn a monster that drags her our of our world. Lilly outfits herself and Jack with renaissance fair armor, plus energy drinks made from the garden plants, and they pursue the monster and Maddy.
