Monte Hale must rescue a widow and her boys from a corrupt lawyer named Abijah Dark and his gang, who have forced them into labor at a jewel mine after capturing the widow's late husband. In a second story, Monte Hale confronts a prejudiced colonel commanding a remote wilderness fort who harbors a secret hatred of Native Americans and has been falsely blaming them for violent raids, which Monte Hale must expose as the work of "the Man Who Hated Indians."

As the gas takes effect, Gabby’s mind spirals into a wild hallucination where posters become flags, pies turn into people, and the sheriff’s office is a scene of mistaken identity and chaos. Amid the confusion, Gabby unwittingly thwarts a robbery—though he’s not sure if he’s the hero or just confused.
