Monte Hale becomes involved with a man named Sam who claims to have stolen gold from a carnival and wants to sell it cheaply, but Monte discovers Sam's true identity as a deputy sheriff setting a trap. After Monte arrests Sam for the theft, complications arise when Sam's brother Jack is killed; Monte is accused of the murder, but through investigation at a local inn he uncovers evidence that Sam himself committed the crime in a jealous rage. Monte clears his name and apprehends the actual killer, resolving the case.
