“Don't Shrink Sam's Head”

In "Don't Shrink Sam's Head," a quiet moment of childhood wonder sets off a chain of reflections across generations. A mother tells her daughter that the moon controls the tides, only to see that belief challenged when the moon itself is destroyed by a comet, leaving the seas still. Years later, the daughter now a mother herself, tries to pass on that same story to her own child—only to be met with a mirror of her own youthful skepticism. Written by Paul S. Newman and illustrated by Sol Brodsky, with a striking cover by Russ Heath, this issue captures a tender, timeless moment of doubt and memory.

A mother tells her daughter that the man in the moon causes the tides but her daughter doesn't believe her. Afterward, the moon gets destroyed by a comet impact and the seas grow calm. Years later, the little girl has grown to have a daughter of her own and she tries to convince her that there used to be a moon which caused the sea to swell. She is shocked when her skeptical daughter says to her "Oh mother, would you have believed a story like that if your mother had told it to you?"
