Sulle tracce di un misterioso manoscritto, per il quale ha perso la vita l'amico Anthony Russo, Nathan si ritrova coinvolto in un'indagine che rivela oscure verità sul mondo accademico e sui cambiamenti radicali della società futura: l'abolizione della carta e dei libri, l'adozione di un nuovo calendario e le dinamiche di un sistema societario sempre più elitario.
