"The Recluse" tells the story of a woman who encounters the terrifying old man Ezra Collin at an ancient house on River Road, then becomes a suspect when he is found dead—a murder for which inspectors suspect her involvement despite a lack of evidence. As investigators question her and she protests her innocence, a man named Darrow is revealed to have left town shortly after the murder. The woman's fate becomes further entangled when a drunk man encounters a fortune teller named Madame Zobo, who reveals he will come into money, leading him to attempt robbery—though the full resolution of these intertwined plots remains unclear from the visible pages.
