“Shark-Hunt”

"Shark-Hunt" in Particle Dreams #1 (1986) introduces Keif Llama, dispatched to Caladrea—a moon of Iidossorn—to investigate disruptions in a mining operation run by massive fosstrics. When a worm expert, Simon Rieche, is called in, the team discovers the true source of the problem lies not in the creatures themselves, but in the mining company’s artificial atmosphere, which has triggered a chain reaction among microscopic worms embedded in the rock. Written and illustrated by Matt Howarth, with full creative control on both interior and cover, this issue blends ecological mystery with quiet, grounded sci-fi tension, all rendered in Howarth’s distinctive, detailed style.

Keif Llama is sent to Caladrea, a moon of Iidossorn, to solve a problem with the mining operation. The mining is carried out by large digging creatures called fosstrics. Hesheme, a fosstric, explains that they are having problems with worms. She calls on a worm expert, Simon Rieche, to help solve the problem. They attempt to remove a huge worm that makes up much of the moon's volume, then realize their mistake. The microscopic worms in the rock are caused by the mining company's artificial atmosphere. The moon is evacuated, but the fosstrics carry on mining under a treaty with Confed.
