Paul Wheelahan's The Panther #51
In "Swamp Killer," Paul Wheelahan's The Panther #51 delivers a taut, pulse-pounding chase that kicks off with a prison escape and a fateful collision on a rain-slicked road. When the Panther intercepts a fleeing car driven by escaped convict Clay Groober—whose reckless driving nearly kills a bystander—he’s drawn into a mystery deeper than a simple manhunt. With art, writing, inking, and lettering all by Paul Wheelahan, and a cover by the same, this 1961 thriller blends suspense and moral uncertainty in a story that’s as much about justice as it is about instinct.

Prisoners Jimmy Clarke and Clay Groober have just escaped from prison. Pursued by armed guards Clarke is shot in the leg, but Groober continues on. Nearby a car sits waiting, and the escapee drives off. In his haste he drives recklessly, sideswiping another car, a car being driven by the Panther. A chance encounter, but one that the Panther chooses not to ignore, and so he drives off in pursuit of the other car. The escapee manages to shoot out the tire of the car pursuing, and thus Groober eludes the Panther. He soon learns more about Groober, and suspects he may have been wrongly convicted.
