Meg and her aunt, touring Europe, are rescued from a Parisian political demonstration by fellow American Carl, a merchant seaman. Meg and Carl fall in love, but Meg’s aunt tries to keep them apart, and books passage home, unaware it’s on Carl’s ship. The ship sinks on the voyage, and Meg thinks Carl has drowned. When Meg arrives in New York, Carl is there to greet her: he was rescued by another ship.
