This issue tells the story of Christopher Columbus, the man who discovered America. After years spent in Portugal planning his westward voyage to India despite skepticism from others, Columbus married the daughter of a Portuguese sea captain and used her father's navigation papers to aid his ambitions. Following his wife's death, Columbus presented his plans to the Spanish King and Queen, who eventually funded his expedition; he set sail with three ships and, after weeks at sea with a mutinous crew, sighted land on September 26 aboard the Pinta. Upon his triumphant return to Spain, Columbus reported his discoveries of a new world rich with gold, spices, and rare woods, and was commissioned to lead another voyage of discovery to the West.
