“Too Many Roses”

In "Too Many Roses," Jan—used to privilege but feeling unseen—finds unexpected warmth in David, whose kindness seems genuine, not tied to her family’s wealth. When her father’s doubts are eased by a trial period at work, their engagement feels like a turning point—until a painful secret shatters that hope. The story unfolds with quiet intensity, capturing a moment of heartbreak and self-discovery in a 1968 romance that lingers in the quiet spaces between words. Cover by typeset.

Jan's father was the managing director of an important business, so she lacked for nothing, but she felt unattractive. When she meets David, he makes her feel attractive and doesn't seem to be after her money. Her father is skeptical, but after a trial period at work, he is convinced also. However, shortly after announcing their engagement, Jan overhears David tell Norma that he loves her and is only marrying Jan for her money. Disillusioned, Jan becomes a nurse at a small cottage hospital.
