Richard has always been wealthy, but has never made anyone happy. He wants to marry a sick girl, but she dies before the wedding. He reads about a girl who gave away her fortune among the poor, but she turns out to be a con artist. Ralph wants to break Richard from this obsession, so he arranges for him to meet willful Jane, falsely telling Richard that she believes she is rich, but is actually broke and that she doesn't know she is going to die in a few months. He knows that no one has put up with Jane for more than a couple of hours, but is surprised when Richard is smitten with her.
