“The Living Legend”

"The Living Legend" kicks off a poignant Western tale in Rawhide Kid #1 (1985), a standout issue written by Bill Mantlo and illustrated by Herb Trimpe, with inks by John Severin and colors by Marie Severin. The story follows the aging Rawhide Kid as he returns to Laramie to honor the memory of Tim McCain, a past life marked by violence and regret, only to face mockery from a railroad crew—and a surprising new companion when a young man mistakes his quiet moment for a jailbreak. The cover, a striking piece by John Byrne, captures the grit and gravity of the moment, setting the tone for a journey where legend and legacy collide.

The aged Rawhide Kid heads to Laramie to place a rose on the grave of Tim McCain, whom he killed in 1872. The Kid's presence dredges up trouble from a railroad crew who mock him, especially when they discover the Kid now wears dentures. A well-meaning young man breaks the Kid out of jail (even though the Kid was simply resting there, not under confinement) and the Kid has to leave Laramie with guns blazing. His young admirer becomes his 'Understudy'.
