A wintry atmosphere of mystery and quiet tension sets the mood for this second volume of Mister Joe and Willoagby: Red Bridge, published by Casterman in 2009. Gabriele Gamberini's painterly cover depicts a snow-blanketed covered bridge — its weathered red walls framing a lone, shadowy figure standing at the far end — while a small child with a sled looks on from the near side, the distance between them charged with unspoken meaning. It's a beautifully understated image that draws you in with stillness rather than spectacle.
