Robotech: The Macross Saga #8
Issue #8 marks the first comic book appearances of Max Sterling and Ben Dixon, two characters who become central to the Macross Saga's military drama — Max in particular goes on to be one of the saga's most consequential pilots. The issue also formalizes Rick Hunter's growth from reluctant recruit to squadron leader, cementing the command structure that drives the series forward. As part of Comico's week-by-week adaptation of the Robotech television broadcast, it placed American comics readers in near-real-time step with the animated series, a rare synchronicity between TV and print storytelling in mid-1980s genre publishing. The issue's wraparound cover format, consistent across the series, also reflected Comico's ambition to give licensed anime material the same visual weight as original comics.

The issue adapts the eighth episode of the Robotech television series, itself derived from the Super Dimension Fortress Macross episode 'Rongesuto Bāsudē' ('Longest Birthday'), which aired in Japan on November 28, 1982. Script duties fell to Jack Herman, with pencils by Reggie Byers and inks by Sam Kieth — then a young Comico journeyman in the early stages of a career that would later include The Sandman and The Maxx. Diana Schutz, who would go on to a distinguished editorial career, is credited as editor, making this issue a quiet meeting point of several talents at formative stages. Comico published the series on an aggressive schedule that matched each issue to its corresponding television broadcast, with the Macross Saga, Masters, and New Generation titles alternating in near-biweekly rotation.
