In "Vigil at Red River," Rocky Lane's horse and the animal become separated in the river, forcing the great stallion Black Jack to fight for his life in the muddy current. The story shows Rocky and a marshal discovering a gang camped at Toner's ranch, with the marshal hiding his horse to approach on foot and get close enough to hear the outlaws' orders. Rocky, having learned the gang's plans, seeks them out to stop them, and after a confrontation involving Black Jack, the marshal indicates that Rocky Lane will be unconscious for about two days but as good as new afterward.
