At age 16, Naomi is stricken with otosclerosis and loses her hearing. Her boyfriend Tom dumps her. Naomi moves to New York and becomes an amateur sculptor. She sells her work to art dealer Rodney, who resells them to rich clients and cheats her on the money, while pretending to love her. Naomi meets fellow sculptor Eric and they fall in love, but he doesn’t know she’s deaf and she doesn’t hear him propose marriage or tell her that Rodney’s a cheat. Eric abducts Naomi and forces her to read Rodney’s lips when he confesses. Naomi and Eric reconcile.
