Peter loses a large sum of money to gambler Charles; his sister Diane agrees to dine with Charles to pay off the debt and save her brother from ruin. Charles, smitten, offers to marry Diane: she rejects him. Peter, insulted, challenges Charles to a duel. Diane makes a wager with Charles: if he wins, she'll marry him; if he loses, he won't kill her brother. Charles loses. During the duel, Charles shoots first and deliberately misses--he is then mortally wounded by Peter's bullet. Diane learns Charles actually won his bet with her but lied, to prove he was an honorable man.
