John had gone to America for three years, but before he left he had told Brenda that he loved her and would come back to marry her. At first Brenda lived only for John's letters, but eventually started going out with other guys. When she finally writes a letter telling John that they are through, her sister worries that he might decide to stay in America. She tears up the letter, hoping when he returns he will turn to her instead.
