Roxy #23 April 1960 [111]
In "She Was His New Recruit," Bessy finds herself unexpectedly in charge when her father’s prize Hereford, Ferdie, escapes at the fair—only to realize he’s just a nervous beast, not a danger. A simple moment of connection with Dave over tea turns awkward, but a quiet note tucked into Ferdie’s rosette hints at a second chance at the dance. Written by E. Durrant and illustrated by Don Walker, this tender slice of small-town life captures a fleeting moment of shy hope, with the cover by Don Walker adding a touch of charm to the 5d comic from April 1960.

When a bull gets loose at the fair, Bessy realizes it is just her dad's prize Hereford, Ferdie, and coaxes him back to his pen. Dave asks her to join him for a cup of tea, but she is so flustered and tongue-tied that he thinks she is giving him the cold shoulder. However, later she sees a note attached to the prize rosette that Ferdie had won, telling her is she changes her mind he would be at the dance.
