Returning home to Barchester after three years, Roger stopped at a bar and reflected on the past while it rained outside. Roger had studied at night, worked weekends to get some money to help him through medical school, cooked his own meals and looked after himself, but Sue's parents didn't approve of him. He planned to come back to marry her, but he couldn't understand why she never wrote to him. When he saw Sue, he discovered that she hadn't received his letters either because her mother had intercepted them. When Sue is injured in a car crash, Roger's medical skills save her life.
