“The Frost Giant's Daughter”

"The Frost Giant's Daughter" marks a pivotal moment in the Savage Sword of Conan: The Original Marvel Years Omnibus #1, collecting early tales from the legendary sword-and-sorcery era. Written by Robert E. Howard and Roy Thomas, with dynamic art by Gil Kane and Neal Adams, and inks by Neal Adams, Pablo Marcos, Frank McLaughlin, and Vince Colletta, the story follows Conan as he returns to Cimmeria only to find his childhood love, Mala, taken by Vanir raiders. Pursuing her across storm-lashed waters, he uncovers a shipwreck haunted by the dead and a mysterious idol, leading him to the Isle of Swords where Mala’s fate takes a tragic turn. The cover, a striking piece by Boris Vallejo, captures the mythic intensity of the tale.

Conan travels home to Cimmeria only to discover that his childhood sweetheart, Mala, has been abducted by a band of Vanir raiders. He pursues them by boat and comes across a ship with dead Vanir and Picts next to a dark idol. Conan takes the idol and heads for the Isle of Swords, where Thorfel the Fair is about to marry Mala. Bur rather than giving herself to Thorfel, Mala kills herself. Conan kills Thorfel and receives unexpected help from a band of Picts who have come to the island looking for their dark idol.
