Second Wave: War of the Worlds #4
In "Desperation," James and Duke face off in a tense standoff resolved only by a quick reconciliation—Miles had feared a Martian was in the house. Now united, they journey to the next city, where chaos reigns: the townspeople act strangely, the Sheriff is preparing to burn the grocer alive over hoarded food, and the doctor is dead. Gladys, a quiet but capable nurse, steps in to help James locate the insulin Ronni needs. But just as they find it, the Sheriff and his men arrive, ready to accuse them of theft. Written by Michael Alan Nelson and illustrated by Chee, with inks by Chee and letters by Ed Dukeshire, this issue's cover by Sunder Raj captures the mounting tension.

James and Duke have an armed standoff but get past the misunderstanding (Miles thought there might be a Martian in the house). They all travel to the next city where James needs to find insulin for Ronni. When they get there, they find the people acting irrationally, with the Sheriff trying to burn out the local grocer who is trying to keep all of the food for himself. They go to the doctor's office and find he is dead. However, Gladys, who is something of a nurse, is there and she helps James finds the insulin for Ronni. But the Sheriff and his men show up and accuse them of stealing.
