“Volcano!”

"Volcano!" is a standout entry in the long-running Secrets of the Unknown series, offering a whimsical yet tense tale of diplomacy and deception. Written with quiet charm and brought to life by Paul Reinman’s expressive art, the story follows a reluctant prince, a girl deemed unattractive by royal standards, and a sorcerer’s apprentice whose magic proves more transformative than anyone expected. The cover by Bill Everett captures the tale’s dramatic flair, with a volcanic eruption framing a moment of quiet tension.

In order to avoid a costly war, a marriage is suggested between two rival factions, but the man finds the girl homely and is not interested. Many of the king's court ply their skills at making her beautiful but none succeed until the sorcerer's apprentice is given leave to try his magic. The war still occurs, however, as the girl marries the apprentice.
