“The Game of Death!”

In *Secrets of the Unknown* #97, Stan Lee and Steve Ditko deliver a chilling tale of time and consequence with "The Game of Death!" Set in 2050, a prisoner escapes to alter the past—only to find himself powerless to change fate, his body intangible as he confronts the one man who saw his crime. Paul Reinman’s cover captures the eerie tension of a man trapped between moments, while Ditko’s art and Lee’s storytelling weave a haunting meditation on inevitability.

In the year 2050 a prisoner reads about the invention of a time machine and so breaks jail to return to the past to rub out the one witness to his crime. However, as he attempts to assault the man, he realizes that he has been rendered intangible like a ghost so as to be unable to effect any change in the course of events.
