Sgt. Fury #5 delivers the first appearance of Baron Wolfgang von Strucker, one of the most consequential villains in Marvel history. Introduced here as an aristocratic Nazi officer personally tasked by Hitler to humiliate and destroy Nick Fury, Strucker would evolve far beyond his wartime origins to become the supreme leader of Hydra and Fury's defining nemesis across decades of comics, animated series, and major MCU films. The issue also follows directly on the death of team member Junior Juniper in #4, making it the first chapter in which Lee and Kirby explore how the Howlers — and Fury in particular — process grief and loss, a genuinely mature storytelling choice for a 1963 war comic. As part of the Lee-Kirby run that established the title as Marvel's premier war book, it helped seed the shared-universe architecture that would link the wartime Howling Commandos to the modern-day spy world of S.H.I.E.L.D.

History

The series itself was born, by Stan Lee's own account, from a bet with publisher Martin Goodman that the Lee-Kirby approach could sell a book even saddled with a deliberately unwieldy title. Issue #5 arrived in November 1963 (cover date January 1964) as part of the opening seven-issue Lee-Kirby collaboration that established the tone, cast, and universe-building connective tissue of the title. The creative team on this issue was Stan Lee (writer), Jack Kirby (pencils and cover), George Roussos (inks), and Sam Rosen (letters). After those founding issues, Dick Ayers took over penciling duties, but Strucker — introduced here — remained a recurring antagonist throughout the run.

Story title: 'At the Mercy of Baron Strucker!' — Strucker challenges Fury to a one-on-one duel on the island of Norsehaven near Denmark, then drugs Fury's pre-fight toast to gain an unfair advantage.
Issue is the first chapter after the death of Junior Juniper in #4, and opens with Fury driving his Commandos through brutal training in direct response to that loss — an early example of emotional continuity rare in Silver Age war comics.

The story was reprinted in Sgt. Fury Annual #1 (1965) and Sgt. Fury Annual #5 (1969), as well as in the British Pow! Annual (1970), Marvel Masterworks: Sgt. Fury Vol. 1 (2006), Essential Sgt. Fury Vol. 1 (2011), the Sgt. Fury Epic Collection Vol. 1 (2019), and The Complete Kirby War and Romance (2021).
Strucker was later adapted into live action by Campbell Lane in the 1998 TV film Nick Fury: Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D. and by Thomas Kretschmann in Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2014) and Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015).
The issue has a British variant edition (published by Bard Publishing Corp.), confirming the title's international distribution reach from its earliest issues.
