“The Screaming Man!”

In *Shadow Riders #1* (1993), the mysterious energy spikes at Mys-Tech headquarters draw in both the enigmatic Boot and the time-jumping Cable—only to set them at odds. As their clash escalates, a Mys-Tech soldier falls in battle, only to be reclaimed and reborn as the new Shadow Rider, Grunt, in a moment that sets the tone for the series. Written by John Freeman and Brian Williamson, with art by Ross Dearsley and colors by Euan Peters, the issue’s cover by Ross Dearsley captures the intensity of the moment.

Huge energy surges from Mys-Tech headquarters attract both Boot of the Shadow Riders and Cable of the X-Men to investigate. Naturally, the pair end up fighting each other instead. When Mys-Tech soldiers attack the fighting duo, one of them is killed and Vorin rides in to take him back to headquarters and resurrect him as the newest Shadow Rider, Grunt.
