“...And Isn't it Bad, So Quiet There, in the Woods?”

In this haunting installment of *Smax*, Alan Moore crafts a quietly devastating tale as Jeff grapples with a painful secret—his elaborate pretense that Robin is his wife, a lie born of guilt and loss. Flashbacks reveal his tragic past as a dragonslayer haunted by the memory of killing his ogre father, and the moment he was broken by the enigmatic Morningbright. Zander Cannon’s evocative art, with Andrew Currie’s precise inks and Ben Dimagmaliw’s subtle coloring, brings a dreamlike weight to the story, while Todd Klein’s lettering underscores its emotional depth. The cover by Zander Cannon captures the story’s eerie stillness, hinting at a truth long buried.

Jeff reluctantly explains that he pretends Robin is his wife so as to avoid marrying his sister. In flashback he tells how he killed their ogre father, and how he became a dragonslayer until utterly defeated by Morningbright, after which he left his world and eventually joined Top 10. Robin realizes that a cryptic message from Morningbright, spoken many years before, is for her.
