After Amazing Spider-Girl was cancelled in early 2009 due to low sales, DeFalco and Frenz continued May Parker's story in a digital-first format branded The Spectacular Spider-Girl, which was simultaneously published in print within the anthology title Amazing Spider-Man Family and later Web of Spider-Man. When those anthology hosts folded in turn, Marvel greenlit a standalone four-issue print mini-series — Spectacular Spider-Girl Vol. 2 — to bring the long-running narrative to a close; issue #1 of that mini-series carried a July 2010 cover date, edited by Tom Brennan and Tom Brevoort, with inks by longtime collaborator Sal Buscema. The DeFalco/Frenz/Buscema team was itself a reunion of the creative unit that had worked together on The Spectacular Spider-Man in the late 1980s, giving the book an intentional aesthetic continuity with classic Marvel storytelling.
