This one-shot is the debut vehicle for Spider-Cat (Earth-999), a spider-powered house cat who became one of the more enduring and genuinely charming oddities to emerge from the Spider-Island event — a character absurd enough to be a throwaway gag but sturdy enough to survive into later multi-verse storylines like Spider-Verse and the 2024 Spider-Society series. The one-shot was produced as part of Dan Slott's sprawling Spider-Island crossover, which ran through Amazing Spider-Man #666–673 in the summer and fall of 2011 under the editorial stewardship of Stephen Wacker — described by USA Today at the time as Slott's most ambitious storyline to date. Marvel assembled four separate creative teams to fill the anthology format: Greg Rucka and Max Fiumara handled the Punisher segment; Kelly Sue DeConnick and Chuck BB contributed a second story; Joe Caramagna wrote a third; and Skottie Young both wrote and drew the Spider-Cat segment, with finishes by Dave Guertin and Greg Baldwin. The cover was painted by Michael Del Mundo, and Rachel Pinnelas served as assistant editor under Wacker.
