Spider-Woman Vol. 7 launched in 2020 under writer Karla Pacheco and Spanish artist Pere Pérez, with the series described as pushing Jessica Drew into heightened action and a deeper examination of her origins; the run was notable for its consistent creative team and old-school cliffhanger structure throughout its 21-issue run. Issue #14, released August 18, 2021, was the thirteenth chapter of their collaboration and arrived as the series shifted from action-centric done-in-one issues into the culmination of the Marchand arc that had been seeded since issue #1. The character of Rose Roché was publicly acknowledged by Pacheco to have been modeled after Marvel editor Angélique Roché, a detail the writer confirmed on social media shortly before the issue shipped.
