Debby is sailing to Maru with her fiancé on a tramp sinker when the boat starts to sink. Keith has to go back for Clare who can't walk and instructs Debby to get on the first lifeboat. But Debby goes back to get her dog, Kalu, and by the time she gets back on deck she has missed both lifeboats. She and Kalu drift on a wooden raft for days until they are picked up by fishermen from the island of Oublie. When the local doctor there discovers Debby is a trained nurse, he doesn't immediately notify Maru of her location, hoping she can teach nursing skills to the natives who assist him on Oublie.
