Since her parents' death, Maria had lived with her aunt and uncle who treated her as a housekeeper. They try to set her up with the mayor's son to enhance their own image, but the young man gets her to pawn her aunt's jewelry to pay his gambling debts and denies his role, leaving Maria to take all the blame. She leaves home and lives with Peter's family of modest means that her uncle and aunt disapprove of. Finally feeling accepted, she is also vindicated when Peter provides evidence to prove her story.
