Star Spangled Comics #28
In "Poor Man's Rich Man," newly minted millionaire "Pop" O'Leary finds himself caught between sudden wealth and a dangerous deception when he inherits a fortune in New Zealand—only to be swindled by a gang who claim he's actually broke and in debt. Written by Joe Simon and Jack Kirby, with art by Kirby and inks by Arturo Cazeneuve, this 1944 tale from Star Spangled Comics #28 follows Pop as he tries to keep his head above water in Suicide Slum, where luxury quickly turns to peril. The cover, by Kirby and Cazeneuve, captures the story’s high-stakes mood with a striking, period-accurate design.

Upon the death of his uncle, "Pop" O'Leary receives news that he has inherited all of his uncle's property including factories and shipyards in New Zealand, and with his new found wealth, he treats people in Suicide Slum to luxuries, racking up a slew of unpaid bills. Then it happens: a few criminals tell him that they sent the letter, he is poor and he owes all that money, but they will "help out" if Pops helps them rob the gashouse he is guarding.
