With Kirk still recovering from his injuries suffered against the Tholians, Spock leads a mission to the planet I'Qos to return Ayal home. Ayal, who has started a relationship with Sulu, leads Spock, Sulu, and Chekov to meet with I'Qosa Speaker Bryni. Bryni is preparing to meet with the leader of the rival Lo'Kari to discuss peace negotiations and invites the Starfleet officers to observe, but things quickly go awry.
