The year is 1675 A.D., and the King of Trirania finds himself and his kingdom under threat of seizure by the Duke of Ronda. The Duke's men capture John, the king's young son, and he remains their captor for eight years. Now the age of twenty, John is brought before the Duke, and told that if his father does not surrender his kingdom by nightfall he will be executed. As he is taken back to his cell he escapes, and is taken in by the villagers who name him John Steel, champion of the people, enemy of the Duke.
