“Galactus”

"Galactus" in Super-Villain Classics #1 (1983) delivers a chilling origin story of the cosmic entity who would become one of Marvel’s most feared figures. Written by Stan Lee and Mark Gruenwald, with art by Jack Kirby and John Byrne, this issue chronicles Galan’s desperate bid to save his people in a dying universe—only to emerge eons later as Galactus, bound to consume planets to survive. The cover by Bob Layton captures the looming, otherworldly presence of the newly awakened being.

In a dying universe, on the planet of Taa, scientist Galan tries to find a way for his race to survive the end of the universe. He commandeers a spaceship towards the center of the imploding universe, but he does not die in "the big crunch". Instead, he gestates in a cocoon for billions of years in a newly-formed universe. When he emerges, it is as Galactus, and he has to feed upon the lifeforce of planets.
