Os X-Men são derrotados por Proteus e Wolverine, em especial, fica contrariado pela vitória do Mutante X. A caçada a Proteus deixa uma horrível trilha de corpos que leva os heróis até Edimburgo, onde mora Joe MacTaggert, o pai do vilão. Vingativo, ele está decidido a acabar com o próprio progenitor.
