Superboy #8
In "Rise of the Hollow Men, Part One: Into the Broken Silo," Superboy confronts a long-buried secret when Mr. Lynch reveals the dark history of Sheriff Nate Kent and Deputy Albert Valentine’s clash with the Took family’s occult rituals. As the Phantom Stranger takes control of Mr. Lynch, he warns Superboy that someone he knows is in peril—sending him and new allies Simon and Psionic Lad to the abandoned Took farm, now Lori Luthor’s home, where they descend into the earth to face the ancient threat known as the Hollow Men. Written by Jeff Lemire and illustrated by Pier Gallo, with colors by Jamie Grant and Dom Regan and letters by Carlos M. Mangual, the cover by Karl Kerschl captures the eerie descent into the unknown.

In front of the diner in Smallville, Mr. Lynch tells Superboy how long ago Jonathan Kent's ancestor Sheriff Nate Kent and his deputy Albert Valentine had stopped Eben Took and his three sons from performing demonic rites on their farm. At the end of the story, however, the Phantom Stranger possesses Mr. Lynch and warns Superboy that a woman he knows is in danger. Simon and Psionic Lad arrive, and the three rush to the old Took farm, now the site of Lori Luthor's home. There, the Phantom Stranger takes them far down into the ground where they find the Hollow Men.
